National Puppy Day: The basics you need when getting a dog

Colleen Paige founded national dog day, national cat day and national puppy day during her decades of experience in the pet and media industry. Considered as one of America’s leading experts in pet and family lifestyle, Paige has made significant contributions to making a difference in the puppy mill industry by encouraging and having an influence on getting more people to adopt from rescue shelters. With continuing education on positive reinforcement techniques, animal nutrition and family safety, Paige’s holidays trend #1 on all search and social media sites each year. So on National Puppy Day this year, what are the key things you need when bringing home a new dog or puppy?

The Comfy Bed

You’ll need somewhere cosy for your new friend to sleep and nap. This will also be their safe place where they’ll go when you need to leave the house, but don’t forget it may end up with a few holes in from little puppy teeth! Check out our current bed range here!

Water and Feeding bowls

Your new companion will need water available constantly so a nice large bowl in a frequently trafficked place is ideal! We recommend the Hownd Hero Bowl as it’s the most hygienic water bowl on the market! Don’t forget to pick up a feeding bowl too - check them out here!

Collar and Lead

You’ll need a way to get your new friend home and keep them safe while they get used to you. The Friendly Dog Collar Company have an amazing range so whether you’ve just got a new puppy or you’re helping to rehabilitate a rescue dog, you can stay safe out in public. Check out our stocked range here and don’t forget to get your ID tag sorted ASAP!

Daily Food

The most important and the most difficult decision to make is the diet of your dog. You’ll likely have been given the information about what your new friend has been eating but you might want to move them onto a complete food that contains as many natural ingredients as possible. Check out our dried food options here and wet food here.

Treats

Did you know we do treat bundles? When you have a new pet it can often be difficult (not to mention expensive!) to find out what they like and dislike. It’s one of the funniest experiences to find out their favourite treats so we put together lots of bundles to help you out without breaking the bank! Find our extensive range of premium, healthy and natural treats here!

Toys

Last but not least, you’re going to need toys. Whether you value your furniture from tiny and very sharp teeth or you’re looking to learn more about the rescue you’ve adopted, toys are great for mental stimulation, teething and bonding between you and your new pet. Check out our healthy and environmentally friendly range here!

Whether old or young, you’ll need these basic items and a few more. We’ve made sure to stock the highest quality and most friendly for the world, so you can be assured that your new friend is getting the best. If you need any help with choosing products, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
