International Homeless Animals’ Day: How do you know who to support?

Every year, on the 3rd Saturday of August, internationally, homeless animal’s have a celebratory day. With our continued commitment to donating a portion of every sale to animal shelters to hep those in need, we couldn’t miss this event. A special day that raises awareness about animals in need; sign us up!

But as more and more of these days appear we need to consider where we’re seeing these days, what they actually mean and whether we’re becoming desensitised to them and doing less because of this.

These events occur throughout the year and are positively focused on raising awareness for those in need - we can all see this. Sometimes it’s puppy farming awareness and the following month it will be shelter dogs. But with so many of these ‘days’ happening and this mainly stemming from social media, is enough being done?

With a lot of these events calling for a show of support, sometimes but not always in a monetary way, our time is most likely to be suggested as an offering. But with all of these events happening frequently throughout the year how do we choose who or what we support and when?

The golden ticket is that no matter what or when you support, your support is greatly appreciated by whomever is lucky enough to receive it. We know that it can often feel like not enough is being done when you so often see these awareness days, shelter appeals and news reports asking for more help, but every little bit makes a difference. These awareness days are also about just that. If you are unable to give any more of your time or donate to these causes, talking about them in person or on social media and letting others know why these causes need support is just as important.

Here’s what you need to know about International Homeless Animals’ day:

- The first celebration of this day was in 1992. The day was made to spread the word on the conditions that homeless animals live in, demanding an end for their suffering and help them by providing them a voice so they are not forgotten.

- This day is celebrated across the world with many events occurring in aid of it including adopt-a-thons, animal blessings, live music, spay/neuter clinics, speeches from local officials, politicians, and veterinarians, candlelight vigils, raffles, and games.

- One of the biggest awareness' raised on this day is about spaying and neutering pets. With a massive reduction in health complications for these animals and stopping the unfortunate unintentional reproduction of animals that end up homeless too.

This day is one of the largest animal awareness days in the calendar. Help by spreading the word and of course, if you wish to frequently help animals in shelters get the support they need consider taking advantage of our donation scheme that sends a proportion of your purchase straight to your chosen animal shelter.
